When I’m not at work, you will find me reading a book, chasing down Texas BBQ, watching football, exploring Central Texas, and planning my next trip to Walt Disney World. As to hobbies, photography is the OG, while vlogging and building Star Wars props are close seconds. You’ll also find me on Sundays running the livestream, and on really crazy weeks, the lighting and sound too, up in the church media booth.
I love connecting with other comms professionals, so if you have any questions, please feel free to ask. Also, if you see me at a conference, please say howdy! I’d love to meet you!
Meet the Person Behind it All
Like most school comms departments, we wear a lot of hats. On any given day you will find me shooting photos, producing a video livestream, editing a podcast, designing posters, scheduling social media posts, updating the website, producing a radio show, or escorting a reporter around a campus. The point is, you don’t have to be a full-time, dedicated webmaster to build and maintain an accessible website.
Wearing a Lot of Hats
Since first getting that letter over a decade ago, I’ve gone from an overwhelmed first-time attendee to a presenter at multiple accessibility and communications conferences across the country. I have presented a two-day accessibility boot camp for school webmasters and developed training for all my district’s web and social media managers.
Expertise Through Experience
Like most of you out there looking at this course, I didn’t choose web accessibility as a career path. I had it thrust upon me. As one of the first school districts in the country to receive a web accessibility complaint, I was thrust into the deep end with little idea of what I was getting into. Our webmaster retired, and my boss handed me the legal notice from the Office for Civil Rights and said, “Fix it.” The problem was, no one had any idea what “it” actually was. And so began an arduous journey of researching, learning, and developing an understanding of what the standards were and how to meet them.
